Giovanni Maw : Landscapes photography, The search for the perfect light

In my pictures I try to capture not only the beauty of the landscape, but mainly the surreal atmosphere that often it creates. Many times, shooting with some friends, I wonder: what is the reality ? what I can see or the others’ point of view?

My landscapes are mainly sunrises. This is for several reasons, first of all the wonderful feeling of the first sunlight of a new day.

In my pictures I try to capture not only the beauty of the landscape, but mainly the surreal atmosphere that often it creates. Many times, shooting with some friends, I wonder:  what is the reality ? what I can see or the others’ point of view? I think the reality of things exists only in our mind; just an inch more or less, the photo and the atmosphere change. I believe the creative post production as a weapon in the hands of each of us. We should remember that film dark room post-production in many cases is even more invasive than light room.

The search for the perfect light often leads me to travel several hours by car, walking in the woods with rain, snow, heat … to try to get there before the sun set in place, with my equipment and my inseparable Canon. I love nature and everything that surrounds it. Many times, before taking a picture, I observe, listen to the sounds, sounds of the sunrise. I like the cold morning air and the smell of freshly plowed land.I think that, when shooting, tour and place planning is very important; but only instinct, not what mind can perceive, makes difference… and that’s why one of the most famous William Eugene’s quotes represents me a lot: “what good is a great depth of field if there is not adequate depth of feeling?”

Giovanni Maw : The search for the perfect light

My range of photographic action is Italy and I firmly believe that it is one of the nations that photographically, can give much: its beauty is unique. I love the lake Trasimeno, where I live: it never disappoints, the atmosphere is indelible in my mind …. it’s an oil painting at all times. In 2011, the lake gave me a great satisfaction, making me win the CANON EOS ADVENTURE. Again, a picture of the lake led me to the finals of the “City of Nettuno’s 2014 Exhibition PHOTOGEM”, a black and white pictures contest.

Throughout my life I have had several photographic publications on Italian and foreign photographic magazines, both print and online; some of my photos have created the covers of CDs, advertising campaigns, and the Umbria region tourist magazines. I have several photo galleries active, as in National Geographic (of which I am a member https://members.nationalgeographic.com/92915263453/# ) and in Italian Vogue. These awards do not change the way I see it: I think I’m only at the beginning and the road is uphill, but the desire to see, to tell, to grasp the beauty, feelings, goes beyond the commendations. Everywhere I go, I “see” pictures to take, and I think this path is unstoppable. The run-up to technology is not for me, before being a fanatic of the latest model of the camera, I try to be a photographer of Patos. This brings me, even today, to take and develop film, or infrared, which are a unique gym. [Official Website]
