I’m 43 years old, I was born and still live in Bucharest and have been working for the past 18 years as an editor for a weekly magazine.
“No Direction Home” is my 12th solo exhibition and represents my homage to homeless people .I always liked to wonder around in Bucharest with the camera hanging from my neck, trying to catch the soul of the street.
It took me a while to be aware of the people living on the street. Some seamed to be dangerous, others crazy so it didn’t look like a good idea to interact with them. Somehow I found the courage to talk to some and to my amazement I realized that they were humble, polite and most of all grateful to be taken into consideration, to feel like someone else cares. This is how this project began.
One breath away from us, a parallel world shudders, one that we most often try not to see, not to notice. Unlike us, the people of this world are preoccupied by one thing only. Will they survive the cold of the night, will they catch the next day, alone, without medical assistance, with no help, with no safety net? I tried to get to know and to photograph these people living on the streets of Bucharest and to hear their stories. Emotional stories showing how thin is the line between or world and theirs. I met people who too had a house, a job, a sense in life, people who are no better or worse than us. A simple greeting, a friendly approach usually make a world of difference to many of them. 20 of these photographs, shot on medium film between April 2015 and February 2016, and printed on silver halide paper in the darkroom, represents a traveling exhibition called “No Direction Home”.
