In this selection of a larger series I am working on, I have been traveling alone due to the pandemic, and creating large panoramic formats of landscapes while altering the scene in front of me with a variety of mirrors.
Its purpose? To build a collection of places while introducing my own commentary of life into the mix, steering away from stereotypical landscape panoramas to catch the eye of viewers and demand more attention than a simple glance.
Furthermore, I find that the arrangement of mirrors expresses the anxiety I have been feeling throughout the pandemic on an array of circumstances going on in my life. This is something that can be seen in the abundance of mirrors, how they all are facing and reflecting different things, breaking up the landscape and interjecting all sorts of differing subjects from around the scene, but in a beautiful and curious manner rather than a jarring one. All of which I have come to realize was a subconscious representation of my thoughts that day and the state my mind is in. Creating tight patterns and designs with the mirrors occupies my mind and allows me to focus on fabricating images, and essentially finding a temporary stability with the process.
The end goal of this project that I have envisioned is publishing a book once I have visited several places within every state; currently, I have reached 12 states and have 39 panoramas so far.
About Brittany Hicken
My name is Brittany and I have been pursuing and practicing photography for about 8 years; After finding the ability and freedom to express myself through my art, and finding my creative voice through exploring an experimenting in my photography classes in both high school and mainly college, I decided to fully embrace the medium. I graduated this past June from Savannah College of Art and Design Savannah Campus with a BFA in photography.
I am based in Atlanta, GA, however I have an immense love for travelling, and discovering new places, and do so a lot! Travel landscape, and travel photography in general is where I am the most passionate because I thoroughly enjoy getting to experience the vast natural sceneries of new places, as well as walking around new locations and getting lost in all that they are. While my focus is on landscapes, I photograph a little bit of everything such as different areas of portraiture, film, abstract, products, accessories, and various summer camps.
My drive as a photographer, and reason for being one, has always been witnessing and capturing the incredible beauty this world has to offer and sharing it to inspire people to get out for themselves and explore. A series that I have been working on for the past year – “Panoramic United States Abstracted” – has become a raw form of that drive to explore, create, and inspire. [Official Website]
