Ewa Cwikla | Cover | Ewa Cwikla (1961) is Polish by birth, but has lived and worked in the Netherlands for decades. Her first experiences with photography go back to Poland when she was 15 years old. At home she found an old Zenith camera with which she experimented to her heart’s content at the after-school photo club of her secondary school and slowly but surely developed her own view of photography. r. Ewa develops as a distinctive photographer, but the retail trade falters. Reason enough for her to sell her photo specialty store in 2015 and to focus on photography from that moment on. She sets up a complete photo studio at home and from that moment on, fills her days with assignments, workshops and making free work.
Urs Bigler | Saltville | As a child, I spent many happy hours with my father in his commercial photography studio. We enjoyed each other’s company and the magical process of photography. With such a childhood, it is not surprising that I decided to become a photographer. I began my professional training in Bern at the age
of 16 and continued my studies in London and Paris. I see photography as a great way to study the way human beings interact with nature and architecture. How we exist as bodies in these spaces is a source of inspiration in my process. Working on a commercial or an artistic project, the fascination with this fundamentally human way of seeing informs my work. An architectural commission and a personal project, such as making portraits of people in the American South, provide an opportunity for discovery.
Graeme Purdy | Portraits from the wilderness | Born and raised in Northern Ireland, my photography has been inspired by nature, wild animals and my love of the outdoors. More recently, I am driven to help protect our wildlife and wild places – driven to make images that connect viewers with nature, understand them and become inclined to take action. I feel my best work is achieved by going the extra mile, looking at wildlife from a different perspective and not following the crowd. My photography has matured over the years and gone are the days of impromptu shooting taking thousands of images in a single day. I have become much more deliberate and focused on making different images. It is a hard road to follow, missing many good shots in the pursuit of the image I have planned.
